Yuggoth Cultures and Other Growths (Alan Moore’s…)

Alan Moore inspired by H.P. Lovecraft? That always sounds cool, and it most certainly lives up to expectation. This three–issue limited series was inspired by the poetry of H.P. Lovecraft. Moore provides readers with sumptuous tidbits of his creative thinking processes, brought to life by various artists in a trilogy of 40–page installments. Yuggoth Cultures was originally planned as a collection of short stories many years ago, until Moore shelved it.

True to form, Moore’s humor and drama juxtapose morality and mortality in–depth, especially in “Nativity on Ice,” “Recognition,” and arguably the funniest story in the three issues, “Leviticus—Chapter 20” (think “Sergio Aragonés Baptizes the Bible”).

One downside that’s not uncommon for short story collections: having tasted some of these wonderful tidbits, readers might yearn to see more of the various characters or settings (especially from “Nightjar”).

Nonetheless, Alan Moore’s Yuggoth Cultures and Other Growths unveils small doses of consistently wicked humor and solid writing from Moore. It’s a must for Moore fans and a worthwhile time investment for other comic readers. Perhaps Moore will someday offer fans more gems like this.
