Rahrwl
(Northstar, 1988)
™ and ©1989 Rahgne Naess
Rahrwl is a cat person equivalent to Conan the Barbarian. He’s a fierce and accomplished hunter, using all his feline savagery to good advantage. At the same time, he’s really quite civilized, taking care of his relatives, and capable of using guile and cunning to best Crocodilemen who threaten them. Like any good looking beast, he also has more than his share of admirers, Sabriena, his catlike girlfriend, as well as the strangely lusty queen of the Crocodilemen.
As a series, Rahrwl is hard to pin down. The stories seem part fantasy/adventure, part-high camp (Rahrwl tends to say things like “Holy Mackerel!” when surprised), and part-light sex comic (with hints of Omaha the Cat Dancer in the bare-chested females and heavy “petting” that occurs from time to time). Still, Norwegian creator Ragne Naess’s art is exceptional, and Rahrwl’s adventures make for an interesting, if somewhat simplistic story.
