In September, 1995 the Marvel universe and the Malibu comics “Ultraverse” were merged in a storyline called “Black September.” The occasion coincided with the real-life acquisition of Malibu by Marvel. Black September brought the companies together both figuratively and literally.

To mark the occasion, the Malibu division relaunched the core Ultraverse titles with special “#×” issues followed immediately afterward by issue #1 of the new volumes. In Rune #×, we see the alien vampire struggle for control with his human half. In the end, Erik (the dark half) agrees to release control of the body during the day if he is allowed the run of it during the night. The deal is made with one stipulation: Erik can not feed on the blood of innocents. Erik agrees, but warns that conscience will cost his human side more than he thinks—a boast made all too real as his human side is cast in a new, demonic form.
