Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

    (Marvel, 1988)
™ and © 1988 The Walt Disney Company

When Marvin the Gag King (owner of Toon Town) is found murdered after it was discovered that he was playing pattycake (literally) with the wife of cartoon star Roger Rabbit, Roger becomes the prime suspect. It is up to Eddie Valiant, down-and-out private detective, to clear Roger, reunite him with the beauteous Jessica, discover the real killer and save Toon Town for the wacky residents.

Mixing animation with live actors was done before usually as a novelty (most notably in Anchors Aweigh, when Gene Kelly danced with Tom and Jerry), but nothing to the extent of “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” in 1988 in which the animated characters were integral to the plot.

On the movie screen, the contrast between the live action actors and the animated characters was obvious and much of the appeal of the movie. Since all the characters are illustrations in this adaptation, the penciller is charged with the responsibility to make the contrast just as distinct. Dan Speigle (Crossfire) is more than up to the task, effortlessly changing from realistic to cartoony styles.
