With its Gothic flavor and transsexual overtones, you’d think this four-issue limited series was a Vertigo book. In fact, Deathwish was part of DC’s Milestone imprint, and one of the edgiest mature-readers-only books the company ever produced. Here, we follow the stories of the gender-conflicted Dini Torres, and the ex-cop Marisa, who is searching for the predatory Deathwish, an unstoppable killer of almost supernatural appetites. Adam Blaustein’s story is a bit over the top, but according to those in the know, the series realistically captures some of the flavor—both the humor and the horror—of life among gender-benders
