Rave Master
(Tokyopop, 2003-2006)
™ and © 2001 Hiro Mashima
graphic novel; reads right to left; b&w
Another tale tailor-made to be the next trading-card-game craze (of course, supplemented by an animated and videogame series), this is about gathering the magic known as the five “Rave Stones.” The evil gang called The Dark Card has forced high-schooler Haru Glory’s hand. Guided by a diminutive snowman look-alike named Plue, Haru wields the mystical sword to become the next “Rave Master.”
Aided by the blacksmith Musica, his gal pal Elie (who may have a dark destiny), and Gale (who may be his long-lost daddy), Haru must defeat a long list of enemy generals to gain power and romance the stones. Now they have finally arrived at the demons’ lair, Gen Tower. Can their combined might trump The Dark Card’s King, who is hell-bent on ushering in the apocalypse?
This shonen (boys’) manga appeals to younger kids who might idolize Haru’s spunk, disdain for authority, and headstrong behavior. The conclusion is that they, too, might enjoy an entertaining rush, if they channel their energy (and allowances) through the cards.
