Lady Rawhide
(Topps, 1995-1996, 1999)
™ and ©1995 Zorro Productions, Inc.
The predominance of “Bad Girl” art in the 1990s introduced this scintillating character to the then-unmined-by-bad-girls era of the 1800s. Originating in Zorro #3, Lady Rawhide is Anita Santiago. She adopted this rather scandalous identity to avenge the blinding of her brother, Ramon. Although her abbreviated, bright, red leather costume could be considered de rigueur for female comic characters in the present, her revealing outfit is quite daring for the Old West, and forms a large part of her offense, since it understandably, distracts her male adversaries.
Lady Rawhide stories have more of a storyline than most of the “Bad Girl” ilk, as a testament to its creator, Don McGregor, a writer known for stories with subtext and character motivation. His Black Panther tales in Jungle Action in the early 70s were prime examples of his talent.
— George Haberberger
