George A. Pflaum’s “Treasure Chest of Fun and Fact” comics were published from 1946 to 1972. Designed as an educational device, the series usually took a break during the summers, when children weren’t in school. Pflaum broke that tradition in 1968, however, to present the first volume of Treasure Chest summer editions.

Published every two weeks, the six issues of this first series featured a wide collection of comic stories, science facts, jokes, and other surprises. These included Frank Borth’s “Humpty Dumpty,” an intelligent horse; Marvin Townsend’s Ali, a gag-strip featuring a turban-wearing jokester; and “Journey to the Moon,” an ongoing science-fiction tale.
