Captain & The Kids
(United Features, 1947-1955)
™ and © United Features
Rudolph Dirks (1877-1968) created a comic strip, The Katzenjammer Kids, in 1897. It quickly built a comedy cast that featured The Captain, kids Hans and Fritz, the Inspector, and Mama. The kids are Mama’s kids, but The Captain is not her husband, just a seaman who came to live with the family. The Inspector was simply a truant officer. When Dirks wanted a vacation, it led to disputes which eventually placed him with another paper. The courts eventually permitted him to do his strip under the name Hans and Fritz, changed in 1917 to The Captain and the Kids. Harold Knerr (1882-1949) took over The Katzenjammer Kids with Dirks’ original syndicate. Dirks’ strip appeared in comics form from Dell; Knerr’s went to Harvey.
