BVC
(Fleetway Quality, 1995)
™ and ©1995 Fleetway Editions, Ltd.
In 1995, Fleetway Editions consolidated several of its children’s comics that had been faltering due to low sales. The result is BVC (“Big Value Comics”), a giant-sized collection of humor strips featuring the highlights of The Best of Buster, Big Comic Fortnightly, Whoopee Monthly, and Whizzer and Chips.
Inside are the characters familiar to readers of the previous magazines: Chalky, the boy who can draw anything with his colored chalks and make it seem to come alive; Odd-Ball, a friendly rubber ball which can shape itself into everything from a bicycle to a rocket ship; Phil Fitt, who, like Popeye, becomes super-powered when he guzzles down a can of beans; and many others. BVC is also notable as one of the few Fleetway Comics backed by a corporate sponsor: Anchor’s Big Top, a desert topping. In return, Fleetway created their own strip, “Mr. Squirty,” as advertising in this comic.
