Superman: The Man of Tomorrow Archives

    (DC, 2004)
™ and © DC Comics, Inc.

This Archive, continuing the exploration of The Silver Age and collecting stories from Superman and Action Comics from January through August 1959, includes several clever tales from a variety of writers and artists, including “The Girl in Superman’s Past,” “The War between Superman and Jimmy Olsen,” “The Super-Servant of Crime,” and “The Make-Believe Superman,” in which the real hero is a man impersonating The Man of Steel to impress his son. As with its predecessor, key appearances of Superman’s supporting cast are introduced in the tales reprinted in this volume, including Clark’s mermaid college girlfriend Lori Lemaris; Metallo, the cyborg whose body is powered by lethal kryptonite; and the adult Bizarro.
Readers are better off appreciating a few stories without thinking about them too hard. In “The Town That Hated Superman,” it’s apparently known that the baby Kal-El was adopted from Smallville Orphanage, making Superman’s secret identity a pretty easy mystery to solve, and Superman’s behavior in “The Ghost of Lois Lane” is puzzling. Completists are likely to question not including #252’s cover story, Supergirl’s debut, and some readers are likely to be frustrated that Bizarro’s story isn’t concluded here.
One welcome feature of the Archives is the creator biographies, providing readers information about creators from this era with whom they might not be familiar otherwise.
