Black Goliath
(Marvel, 1976)
™ and ©1975 Marvel Entertainment Group
Long before Icon, Hardware, or Shadowman, this fifteen-foot-tall black super-hero was thwarting criminals—white, brown, and black, as well as extraterrestrial—in his own series. It began when Bill Foster helped Avenger Henry Pym, the original Goliath, fight the side-effects of his super-powers. In doing so, Foster learned and perfected the ability to grow fifteen feet in an instant.
But being a super-hero wasn’t all it was cracked up to be, as Black Goliath discovered when he lost his girlfriend and realized that the public cared less about his true exploits than about gossip and rumor.
This series, which only had a five-issue run, may simply have been before its time.
