The Ray
(DC, 1994-1996)
™ and ©1994 DC Comics, Inc.
Years after his debut in The Ray mini-series, Ray Terrill is back. Penned by Christopher Priest (Jim Owlsley, writing under a new name), this ongoing series stars Ray as the hero with near godlike power, but with the sensibilities and problems of the teenager that he is. Ray is the son of “Hap” Terrill, the Golden Age Ray. Ray inherited Hap’s power to channel light energy. Unfortunately, Hap was not with Ray to teach him how to use these awesome abilities.
All in all, taking on super-powered bad guys like Brimstone may seem less problematic than the other challenges Ray faces—like having to find an apartment, or meet his girlfriend Jenny while dressed up as a chicken for his job at a fast-food restaurant. Although the series sometimes seem a bit too “hip” for its own good (the lead male characters are given to speaking in rap music clichés), it’s still an interesting take on teenage super-heroism.
