BugHouse (Cat-Head)
(Cat-Head, 1994-1997)
©1994 Steve Lafler and Cat-Head Comics
BugHouse is a well-written series about life in a the post-war bebop scene. The difference is that in this reality, the smoky back rooms and crowded night clubs are peopled with jazz-loving bugs. For the purposes of the story, it hardly seems to matter, since the characters come across as more developed and believable than many humans in other comics.
The nominal star of the series is Jimmy Watts, a talented sax player in the tradition of Charlie Parker. Like Charlie, however, Jimmy has a drug problem (“Bug Juice”). His suppliers are more than happy to keep him loaded for free, but their generosity is bound to lead to his downfall unless, with the help of his friends, he can muster the courage to kick the habit. Later episodes of BugHouse plan to explore other facets of life in Bugtown—all brought to you from the bugged-out mind of creator Steve Lafler.
