Jewish Hero Corps

“Shayach,” the name of the company that produced this comic book, means “relevant” in Hebrew. For some readers, these heroes are quite relevant. For others, they are irrelevant in the extreme.

In their six-pointed satellite headquarters, looking like something out of a Mel Brooks movie, the Jewish Hero Corps includes the likes of Magen David, Kipa Kid, Shabbos Queen, and Minyan Man.

Here come the translations: a “magen David” or “shield of David” is better known as a “Jewish star.” A kipa is a yarmulke (or “skullcap”). Shabbos is the Hebrew word for the Sabbath. A minyan is the quorum of 10 needed for prayer services. That’s a lot to digest if it’s not already “shayach.”

The comic book is very well-produced, but it’s not really made for general audiences. It excels as an educational comic with positive role models. It may be indispensable for Hebrew schools or yeshiva elementary schools. It may even find some members of its target audience in comic shops. For those readers, this comic may merit an “A.”

For most readers, however, it’ll just be a head-scratcher. Presumably, the potential audience will self-select, based on the title.
