There’s remarkably little eroticism in Milo Manara’s Gullivera, a one–day retelling of Gulliver’s Travels through the lens of a half–naked young woman. The material unfolds so overtly it’s silly: a checklist of bondage, playful sadism, and some Sapphic seduction belabor our heroine, who just wants to get home. It’s all a little rushed. Giving each of the major kinks a shot, Manara ends up teasing too little for even a deliberate tease. The art, however, is magnificent. Each twist of body language, each facial quirk, each pose is a perfect capture, and an indication of just how Manara became so popular in Europe (why a brilliant artist with a penchant for sexy women has failed to catch on in the States is a frustrating query). Manara depicts real people, albeit in extraordinary scenes. He has fun playing with scale, depicting blatantly what Swift intimated in the original Gulliver. If this were stretched out over chapters, it might have become a legendary work. As it stands, it’s an entirely laudable product with amazing, if graphic, visuals.
