Actor John Travolta got his break as one of the young “Sweathogs” in this 1970s television series which also enjoyed a ten-issue run as a comic book. Gabriel Kotter, formerly one of the Sweathogs, a nickname for incorrigible students, returns to Brooklyn as a teacher. His class consists of a variety of young Sweathogs, including slow-witted pretty boy, Vinnie Barbarino; deadbeat liar, Juan Epstein; perpetually disruptive Freddy “Boom Boom” Washington; and the sometimes weird and always unintelligible Arnold Horshack. These rascals immediately take to their new teacher, a wise-cracking joker and Sweathog-done-good.

Technically, Kotter is supposed to be teaching the Sweathogs social studies, but little traditional teaching goes on in his classroom. On the other hand, some might consider his lighthearted banter—and the real-life issues his students discuss—social studies of another sort.
