Someone’s killing psychics, and private detective Jon Novak must save each victim before the murder takes place. Novak can absorb the appearances and memories of others’ briefly and with great pain. His “normal” state actually belongs to his abusive father, whom he killed, but his true face is more abnormal than that: almost featureless, with taut flesh around the orifices. It’s a neat concept, especially with the apparently ageless Novak posing as his own son, but writer Kel Nuttall’s dialogue and pacing skills are disserviced by an ending that belongs only in Ashley Judd films. A tip to all murderers: if you must get the only people who can stop your crime spree involved in the investigation, make sure it in some way serves your evil plans. Artist Yildiray Cinar’s dirty style fits the material, but some pages substitute sketchiness for representation, looking more like thumbnail art than finished product. The two backup stories deliver much more bang in both writing and drawing, showing the real promise of this title.
