X-Men: Children of the Atom (2nd Series)

    (Marvel, 2005)
™ and ©2005 Marvel Characters, Inc.

Reading these first three compiled issues of Marvel’s X-Men, it’s easy to see why they’ve achieved their popularity, and odd to recall that they almost didn’t reach such heights until they became uncanny, and picked up a few new characters. The Lee/Kirby issues are still packed with wonderfully bizarre (and, at times, even more wonderfully dorky) twists and turns. Try not to laugh when Cyclops points out his eye beams are “a natural counterforce to batter the unnatural magnetic field,” and enjoy the innocent adventure. Paul Reinman’s inks, by the way, look remarkable over Kirby’s pencils.
