Zoo Funnies (2nd Series)
(Charlton, 1953–1955)
™ and ©1953 Capitol Stories, Inc.
Zoo Funnies, the second comic book series to bear that title (the first was a similar series from Charlton in the mid-1940s) is one of many interchangeable funny animal titles that flourished on the stands for years, soaking up the spare dimes of lots and lots of younger readers. Punchy, the Black Crow, Leon the Lyin’ Lion, and Nip the Cat were some of the crew that frolicked through the pages of Zoo Funnies.
Unlike other funny animal comics that took place in natural settings, Zoo Funnies characters were basically humans with animal heads: they wear clothes, live in houses, carry guns (!), and generally help themselves to the bounties of civilization. Zoo Funnies was also enlivened by the bold and colorful artwork of Al Fago.
