The Nostradamus Chronicles: 1559-1821
(Tome, 1997)
™ and ©1997 Donald Marquez
This one-shot covers the predictions of Michel de Nostredama, more popularly known as Nostradamus—the most renowned prophesier of all time. Writing in the 1500s, he penned a book called “The True Centuries,” which set out hundreds of predictions in the form of four-line poems, or quatrains.
Deliberately obscure, a typical quatrain read: “When the litters are upset by the whirlwind/And faces will be covered by their cloaks/The republic by new people vexed/Then whites and reds judge wrongly.” Employing a great deal of creative license, true believers took this as a sure prediction of the French Revolution (with the litters of the privileged ones being overturned by the forces of revolution; stealth being employed by the fleeing exiles; and vague reference to the colors of the flags of either side). Conveniently, Nostradamus’ predictions omit dates, allowing them to be interpreted to match any historical occasion.
