Justice Traps the Guilty
(Headline, 1947-1958)
™ and ©1952 Headline Publictions, Inc.
Justice Traps the Guilty was one of the pioneering crime comic titles, a product of the studios of prolific comic masters Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. By the late 1940s, Kirby had matured into a style of staggering power and depth, bringing a white-hot intensity to Simon’s poignant scripts. In the early issues of Justice Traps the Guilty, action and drama simply exploded off the pages.
The creators drew from their own experiences growing up in working-class ethnic neighborhoods in the 1920s and ’30s to create complex and convincing portraits of the criminal underworld, melded with an almost Old Testament brand of justice and retribution.
As Simon and Kirby’s involvement diminished and imitators flooded the market with crime comics of lesser quality, Justice Traps the Guilty lost much of its edge, and was squashed after the arrival of the Comics Code.
