Courtney Whitmore is the new Star-Spangled Kid and a brash and impulsive brat. She’s environmentally conscious and an animal rights activist at heart. Meanwhile, the Kid’s overly protective sidekick, S.T.R.I.P.E., is actually Courtney’s stepfather, Pat Dugan formerly known as Stripesy. Beneath the self-confident exterior, Courtney is hiding the fact that she’s scared of making a mistake. Intuitively, she knows a mistake at this level could cost someone his or her life. Pat’s S.T.R.I.P.E. armor is an excellent metaphor for masking his concern for her own well-being. There are plenty of conflicts in this book: generation gap, stepfather-stepdaughter, old school vs. hip-hop, et al. All of this and fighting super-powered criminals, too.
