U.S. Fighting Men
(Super, 1963-1964)
™ and ©1964 Super Comics
U.S. Fighting Men repackages 1950s war comics from second-and third-tier publishers for a new audience in the early 1960s. Korean War-era combat tales in many ways represent a low point of the comics artform, combining simple-minded ideology with hateful racist stereotypes, not to mention some of the worst artwork and writing ever to appear between four-color covers. Somehow, U.S. Fighting Men managed to rescue a few credible works from this muck, including a literate E.C.-style “war is hell” fable illustrated by the great Joe Maneely, a beautifully-drawn tale by underrated artist Robert Sale, and some early work by Russ Heath, who would become one of the best war comics artists to work in the medium. Not every story is up to these standards, but the surprisingly strong selections make this a series worth seeking out.
