Each issue of the four-volume series Shadowplay includes two full-color vampire stories running back-to-back.

The use of close-ups in Ben Templesmith’s pared down illustration gives “Demon Father John’s Pinwheel Blues,” written by Amber Benson (Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s Tara), the claustrophobic feeling of a nightmare.

Equally stylized, Christina Z and Ashley Wood’s “Shunt”, about a psychologist’s attempt to escape a sex slave ring run by vampires, uses some abrupt narrative techniques that may require multiple readings to understand.

Both stories offer great artwork and real chills.
