Love Me Tenderloin: A Cal McDonald Mystery

    (Dark Horse, 2004)
™ and © 2004 Steve Niles

Cal McDonald is a detective right out of the Sam Spade school. Smart, two-fisted, and hard-drinking, McDonald and his ghoul partner Mo’lock specialize in hunting down monsters and other things that go bump in the night.
In this moody one-shot, Cal investigates the homicide of an entrepreneur nicknamed the “Meat King,” who was apparently strangled by… pieces of meat? The naturally confused cops, knowing Cal’s specialty, draft him to work the case. Staking out the meat factory, Cal finds a particularly nasty spook with meat for mitts and murder on his mind. After some tenderizing, Cal and Mo’lock dig to the bottom of the mystery and the shocking events that led to the monster’s creation. Niles (30 Days of Night, Remains) writes horror with a healthy dose of humor, and Templesmith (Silent Hill: Dying Inside, Dark Days) provides his usual wonderfully macabre artwork.
