In the early days of the Marvel Universe, the Avengers recovered the body of Captain America — which had been preserved in suspended animation in a block of ice — from deep beneath the ocean’s surface; according to Iron Man, Cap “and his youthful partner, Bucky… vanished during a mission in World War II.” As his popularity as one of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes grew, Cap earned a solo series, splitting Tales of Suspense with Iron Man, beginning with #59. A good chunk of these stories were previously untold tales from Captain America and Bucky’s World War II days and featured the words of Stan “The Man” Lee and the pictures of Jack “The King” Kirby — the architects of the Marvel Universe. The first volume in this black–and–white trade paperback series reprints Cap’s entire Tales of Suspense run, as well as the first three issues of his long-running series that began with #100, taking over the Tales of Suspense numbering — all for the bargain price of $14.95.
