The Great Society Comic Book

    (Parallax, 1966)
™ and ©1966 D.J. Arneson and Tony Tallarico

A bizarre political satire by D.J. Arneson and Tony Tallarico, The Great Society Comic Book casts the chief political figures of 1966 as a band of hapless super-heroes and villains. In the first issue, SuperLBJ (president Lyndon Johnson) has gone missing, and it’s up to the Group Resigned to End All Threats, commonly known as the G.R.E.A.T Society to find him.

In fairness, the satire is oblique at best, and the comic moments fall flat more often than not. Still, political wonks and history buffs can have royal sport playing “name that politician” as Fidel Casto, Nikita Kruschev, Richard Nixon, Lady Bird Johnson, Hubert Humphrey, Barry Goldwater, and numerous others do battle in super-hero guises.
