Mars on Earth

    (Piranha, 1992)
™ and ©1992 Damon Cardwell

If you’re looking for spandex-clad super-heroes, look elsewhere. This is a quieter piece. It’s the story of Mars, a bowling hustler who leads a life of ups and downs, of camaraderie and loneliness, of wildness and nothingness. It’s the everyday story of a man who bowls, drinks, goes to strip clubs, gets haircuts, goes to baseball games, and thinks of killing himself. Perhaps it’s a book about nothing, but it was published before “Seinfeld” was a hit. Mars leads a life of quiet desperation, and in chronicling it, writer Damon Cardwell and artist Glenn Barr delve into some of life’s little idiosyncrasies and create something wholly unexpected and charming.
