Jungle Comics (A List)

The success of Tarzan, who was licensed to almost every major publisher at one time or another, spawned a myriad of imitators. Chief among these was the premier female jungle heroine, Sheena, Queen of the Jungle.

Sheena first appeared in a black-and-white tabloid-sized European book called Wags in 1937. Jerry Iger, later a collaborator with Will Eisner, convinced Fiction House to buy the printer’s plates and publish Sheena in the U.S. in Jumbo Comics, a black-and-white oversized book. Later Sheena garnered her own title, owing no doubt to her generous proportions and skimpy outfit, a winning combination in almost all areas of popular culture.

In 1997, A-List Comics began reprinting stories from the Fiction House stable of titles such as Planet Comics, Wings Comics, and Jungle Comics. This reprint returned the foremost jungle heroine, Sheena, Queen of the Jungle, to the comics racks.
