Justin Green’s notorious “underground” series Binky Brown is anthologized in this sampler from Last Gasp. When many of these tales were created (circa 1972) they dealt with Binky’s Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, teen angst, and religious guilt. Green claims in the book’s introduction that some of the conditions Binky suffers from are now treatable, but that fact should not ruin your enjoyment of these reissued tales. Binky’s tales run along the same lines of the best of Bill Griffith’s (Zippy the Pinhead) or Robert Crumb’s work and predate Harvey Pekar’s American Splendor autobiographical style by many years.
