Tor (Epic)

    (Epic, 1993)
™ and ©1993 Joe Kubert

The 1993 incarnation of Joe Kubert’s Tor was part of Epic’s “Heavy Hitters” line of comics. Other titles in that ill-fated sub-brand included Midnight Men, Feud, and Sachs and Violens. With few exceptions, the glutted market of 1993 was unkind to the Heavy Hitters line, although this was no indication of the quality of the comics themselves.

Caveman Tor made his debut in the one-shot One Million Years Ago, and later appeared in any number of titles, most notably in a 1970s series from DC. In this new, magazine-sized title, we follow Tor as he tracks down the murderer of his father, Tokar. Set as a prehistoric adventure, this title also draws parallels between Tor’s world and our own. We may not consider ourselves savages, but raw characteristics like greed, vengeance, heroism, fear, and violence are still at the core of human nature.
