This graphic novel-style special comes relatively early in the genesis of Matt Wagner’s Grendel. It’s the story of Brian Li Sung, an embattled stage manager who hates his job and is still reeling from the death of his lover, Christine Spar. It becomes clear that Brian’s life—and his sanity—is slowly unraveling. With his control slipping away, he makes a Grendel mask and soon seems possessed by the spirit of vengeance it symbolizes. He becomes a death-dealer, a stalker. But all the same, he knows that by giving in to the devil, he’s consigned himself to Hell.
