The Book on the Edge of Forever
(Fantagraphics, 1994)
“The City on the Edge of Forever” was a famous episode of Star Trek, written by science-fiction great Harlan Ellison. Christopher Priest twists the name slightly to form the title of this critique of Ellison and the ill-fated book, “The Last Dangerous Visions.” TLDV was meant to be the final tome in a trio of acclaimed science-fiction anthologies. The first two volumes, however, had appeared over a quarter of a century ago. Although Ellison had stated on numerous occasions that the third volume was ready for print, it has yet to see daylight. In a scathing, yet mostly fair critique, Priest ponders what may be one of the greatest exercises in procrastination in modern science-fiction literature.
This volume is more a long essay than a comic book. It was published in 1994 by Fantagraphics, a noted independent comic publisher whose chief, Gary Groth, is himself a notorious Harlan Ellison critic.
