Writer Steve Gerber was one of comics’ angry (and talented) young men of the 1970s, peppering the pages of Howard the Duck, Man-Thing, and The Defenders with barbed wit and trenchant social and political observations. With the Vertigo mini-series Nevada, Gerber may have once again found a suitable platform for his vision: a twisted detective story featuring hardheaded Vegas showgirl Nevada and her loveable pet Ostrich Bolero. Nevada debuted in the pages of the Vertigo: Winter’s Edge collection (though the character first appeared nearly 20 years ago in Howard the Duck), and has now branched out into this six-part mini-series. Deliberately paced, with plenty of shocking mystery, strong art by Phil Winslade and Steve Leialoha, and Gerber’s trademark gift for characterization, Nevada is proving to be much more than flash and glitter.
