The Superhero Women

    (Marvel, 1977)
™ and ©1977 Marvel Characters, Inc.

When you think of Marvel super-heroines, names like Storm, Elektra or Rogue might leap to mind. But in the 1970s, when Marvel founder Stan Lee edited this compilation, the big names were Invisible Girl, Black Widow and Red Sonja. They, along with 7 other super-women, are the feature attractions in this, the fourth in a series of Marvel trade paperbacks published by Fireside Books (which also included Origins of Marvel Comics and Bring on the Bad Guys). Lee is at his bombastic best, delivering equally entertaining, behind-the-scenes introductions, whether he’s presenting stories of obscure heroines (anyone remember the Femizons?), or classic Marvel masterpieces, such as the origin of the Wasp. Also included are Spider-Man’s first encounter with Medusa of the Inhumans and the Fantastic Four tale that introduced the Invisible Girl’s force-field generating power. The stories are embellished by many Marvel Bullpen greats, including Jack Kirby (Captain America), John Romita (Amazing Spider-Man), John Buscema (Conan), Wally Wood (Daredevil), and many others.
