Graphic novel; reads right to left, b&w

By reading a magical book, Miaka is transported from her high school into a fictional Chinese feudal society. As the priestess of the mighty diety Suzaku, she must fulfill her mission of assembling the mythic seven Celestial Warriors. If she rescues the land of Hong-nan, then Suzaku will grant her three wishes. But will Yui, once her best friend but now the priestess of a rival god, succeed in thwarting her? Jealous of Miaka’s relationship with the warrior Tamahome, Yui has managed to drug him to do her bidding: to kill Miaka! Meanwhile, distraught that the love of her life is lost to her, Miaka contemplates suicide. Hotohori not only saves her but must fend off the oncoming assassin. Can Miaka summon Suzaku before it’s too late?

Yu Watase’s successful shojo manga has captivated throngs of female readers from both East and West. A skillful blend of historicity, soap opera, and modern teen angst, the tale employs a large cast of characters in swordplay, smooching, and suspense. Though not a macho-man’s cup of tea, Fushigi Yugi successfully caters to its audience’s yearnings, dreams, and insecurities with an accomplished hand.
