Steel, the Indestructible Man

Henry “Hank” Heywood was determined to serve his country during World War II, despite his fiancée’s wishes to the contrary. But before he saw action in Europe, he ran across a group of Nazi spies. They struggled, setting off a tragic explosion which nearly blew Hank to bits.

Luckily, he and his fiancée’s father collaborated to put him back together again—in a body made almost completely of steel. His body also had micro-motors to move the muscles, larger lungs, and a more powerful heart. The Marines wouldn’t let him see battle, though, because of his “medical disability.” This didn’t keep the ever-ingenious Hank out of action. He created a costume for himself and became…Steel, the Indestructible Man.

Steel disappeared at the conclusion of this series, reappearing later in All-Star Squadron #8.
