This second title from Jim Shooter’s Broadway Comics, opened with a Youngblood parody: a six-page, over-the-top, ultra-violent fight scene. Then the story segues away from the fight scene as we realize it’s just pages from a comic book being read by character Troy Hickenbottom in this title’s key feature, “Image Isn’t Everything.” Troy is serving time in prison and is tormented by the suspicion that his girlfriend is being unfaithful. His cellmate, Leo, planned on escaping by harnessing the free energy of the universe via meditation. But Troy’s anxiety interferes with Leo’s concentration and Troy is transformed into a familiar Image-Comics-style character, complete with an exaggerated physique and belts around his thighs.

Shadow State also contains a story featuring Fatale, who premiered in Powers That Be.
