Batman/Superman/Wonder Woman: Trinity

As with many prestige format comic books, Trinity, which stars DC’s holy trinity of marketable characters, flushes continuity down the toilet. This may annoy anal-retentive fanboys, but those who can put this concern aside will find a classy work that feels both modern and old school. The situations, such as Superman rescuing a runaway train and actually getting along with Batman, are purely retro, but other elements, such as the plot structure and the eco-terrorist angle, are fittingly modern. It makes for a nice blend, especially considering the iconic, long-lasting nature of the featured characters. Superman and Wonder Woman’s instant kinship (it’s their first meeting) and resultant teamwork are especially nice to observe.

As expected, Wagner’s (Grendel, Mage) art isn’t overly detailed or particularly ornate, but he knows just what to include and what to leave out and he draws the heroes with bold, confident lines, imbuing them with the majestic appearance they deserve. His action scenes ooze with excitement, and the overall regal look of the issue will make readers feel justified in parting with their hard-earned seven bucks. Dave Stewart’s rich coloring only adds to the attractiveness, the weightiness, and the professionalism of the book.

Trinity proves that potentially worn-out characters have life when treated with respect and a sense of epic adventure.
