Michael Nazareth was young, strong, and good-looking, but he wanted more. Much more. Michael wanted to master the pure essence of power—a power that he, like Nietzsche, believed lay within each one of us. To unleash this power, Michael traveled to Calcutta, then on to Katmandu. It was there that he accidentally murdered a man. In fleeing the police, he fell into the cult of Yama, a guru who promised to show him true power. Instead, he showed Michael a year of madness and death. Michael cut the bodies of the dead, became a soldier for Yama, and slept in solitude where he dreamed of demon lovers who sliced him into pieces. At some point, Michael changed. Something snapped in him, and he found power.

Returning to New York, he crushed the skull of a mugger in one hand. That exploit made him seem the perfect recruit for a group of ex-marines called “the Retaliators” who wanted to act as super-heroes in order to battle crime.
