Hardware was the premiere title of DC’s ethnically oriented Milestone line of comics. It features Curtis Metcalf, a black genius from a working-class neighborhood. After he wins a science fair, world-famous inventor Edwin Alva takes him under his wing, and eventually giving him a job researching and inventing whatever he wants, and paying him extremely well, to-boot. Metcalf’s inventions make millions for Alva’s firm, but when Metcalf asks Alva to share some of the profits, all of Metcalf’s illusions are shattered as his mentor and boss refuses. Metcalf can’t quit and as he soon finds out, Alva is deeply involved in organized crime, but is so powerful that he’s beyond the reach of the law.

But knowledge is power. In his own laboratory, Metcalf creates a suit that gives him fantastic powers. With it, he takes on Alva, as Hardware. Once a cog in the corporate machinery, now he’s out to strip some gears.
