Starchy
(Excel, 1998)
™ and ©1998 Mark McElligott
Something of a spoof of Batman, Starchy, The Dark Spud is a comic book populated by walking, talking potatoes. You read right—potatoes. After responding to the Spud signal, Starchy, clad in domino mask, cape, and buccaneer boots, investigates a series of crimes and is surprised to find that all of the evidence points toward his ally in the police department—Commissioner Julian Fries. (Yes, the puns get worse.) This black-and-white one-shot is somewhat one-note. While it attempts to poke a bit of good-natured fun at everyone’s favorite Dark Knight, it fails to be very funny at all.
