The Tick Color

Tick fans reeling over the premature cancellation of the television series can take a degree of consolation in the fact that a comic book based on the big blue arachnid is still being published. Written by Marc Silvia (with art by Mychailo Kazybrid and Kevin Atkinson), The Tick Color lacks Tick creator Ben Edlund’s direct involvement, and it shows.

Although short on laugh-out-loud scenes, still, there is some entertainment to be found here as the character exhibits his trademark ignorance, and a number of conventions of the super-hero genre are parodied in an amusing fashion. Some of the better moments involve issue #6 with Arthur deciphering (Tick’s son) Proto-Tick’s simple gestures as something impossibly elaborate, Tick returning a costume to a super-hero supply store, and Blue Rocket’s excuse for not trying to prevent Chairface’s evil kidnapping scheme.
