Doug Allen first began drawing the truculent little cuss known as Steven back in 1976. As he puts it, “I had a lot of anger and Steven was an outlet for it. Twelve years later, I still have a lot of anger, but I think Steven has kept me from killing somebody. I let him do it for me.”

And anger is certainly one of the key traits of this diminutive character. He has assaulted Santa Claus, murdered fellow cartoon characters, and generally has gotten nastiness down to an art. But he’s also very funny, a fact that has made him a long-running favorite in Newspaper, a Providence, Rhode Island weekly. This title collects those weekly strips into comic book form.
