Alec: Love and Beerglasses
(Escape, 1985)
©1985 Eddie Campbell
This sequel to Eddie Campbell’s similarly titled Alec: Episodes from the Life of Alec MacGarry, continues to chronicle the often clumsy adventures of Alec and his pals. Mostly, their so-called adventures occur in the local pub, occasionally in similar, if less local, surroundings.
Alec is the unofficial historian among his group of friends, and so it falls to him to record and remember the day-to-day routine of their lives. There is no real beginning or end to this story, just the ordinary things that happen to stick out in Alec’s mind. Sometimes these events are important, sometimes not. What makes this book appealing is the “Everyman” quality that Alec possesses. He could be you, or me, or any of us. We have all spent our time searching for life’s great meaning, enjoying a pint or two along the way.
