Wildcards

On the far-off world of Takhisis, the inhabitants have been battling each other for centuries using psionic powers. Seeking an edge, they developed a virus that could be used to mutate themselves into more powerful beings. But they needed a place to test it—they chose our world for this test.

In 1946, a bomb containing the virus was exploded over New York City. This virus—nicknamed the “Wildcard Virus,” due to its unpredictable effects—killed ninety percent of the people it came into contact with. Of those remaining, nine out of ten became “jokers”—hideously mutated beings. Only one in a hundred “drew an ace” and wound up with a useful mutation. These aces became the new super-heroes, although they are despised by those less fortunate.

This series is drawn from the best-selling set of Bantam science-fiction books by the same name.
