The Little Mermaid (Walt Disney’s…)
(Disney, 1990)
™ and © Walt Disney Productions
The original tale of the Little Mermaid was a somewhat gruesome affair, in which a lovestruck mermaid makes a supernatural deal to win the heart of a surface-dwelling sailor. At the risk of her soul, she contracted with a sea witch to use magic to give her legs, which would let her walk on land to meet her beloved. One of many catches was that she was denied use of her voice, and that the legs she walked on caused pain with every step. In the original story, the sailor married someone else, and the mermaid committed suicide. A memorable, if depressing tale, indeed!
Enter Disney, with their movie adaptation of this classic tale. Here, Ariel, the mermaid is accompanied by a slew of animated animals, most notably Sebastian the Calypso-singing crab. In Disney’s version, Ariel gets her man, and everyone lives happily ever after. While it lacks the heart-wrenching power of the original, it was visually stunning, happy, and a monumental box office success.
