Ash: The Fire Within

In this mini-series, Ashley Quinn, the fireman turned part-time super-hero, confronts Adam, the alien from the future who plans to enslave the human race. Adam has sought out Quinn to retrieve the regeneration unit that saved Quinn’s life and gave him the ability to control fire as Ash. Quinn’s survival will have a detrimental effect on Adam’s plans in the future, so Adam quite simply and condescendingly demands the unit and Quinn’s loyalty…or life. Quinn declines, the two do battle, and in the resulting blaze, Ash emerges.

The artwork, by creators Joe Quesada and Jimmy Palmiotti, is expressive and exaggerated in the manner popularized by Todd McFarlane. This style works well for humorous asides such as the distress felt by a squirrel during the fight, depicted by a grave with a headstone in the squirrel’s thought balloon.
