The Island of Dr. Moreau
(Marvel, 1977)
™ and ©1977 American International Pictures, Inc.
This one-shot special edition adapted the 1977 movie “The Island of Dr. Moreau,” a classic science-fiction story by H.G. Wells. In it, a castaway sailor named Andrew Braddock wrecks his rowboat on the shoals of a strange island. Dazed with fever, he immediately falls into some sort of man trap. When he awakens, he is in a compound belonging to the mysterious Dr. Moreau.
Braddock soon learns that Moreau had been conducting experiments to alter the course of nature itself. Moreau has managed to evolve the island’s native species into “humanimals”—beings halfway between men and beasts. To these humanimals, Moreau is both creator and lawgiver. In a famous scene, Moreau is seen questioning them, “What is the Law?!” to which they recite the litany, “Walk on two legs, not on four,” “No spill blood” and so on. Ultimately, however, blood is spilled…and the line separating man and beast is forever crossed.
